My imagery explores a contemporary reinterpretation of Anna Atkins's pioneering mid-19th-century photographic studies of algae and botanical specimens—life forms that occupy the foundational levels of the ecological pyramid. For my large-scale algae images, I collect specimens of oceanic flora alongside plastic and glass pollution from waterfronts and beaches across the metropolitan area and parts of Long Island, New York. Using a flatbed digital film scanner, I simultaneously scan these specimens, visually illustrating the alarming coexistence of natural and man-made elements. This juxtaposition on a magnified scale highlights the pressing issues of industrial waste and overconsumption, aiming to raise awareness about their impact on marine ecosystems.
