In my series Premonitions, I fabricate a futuristic vision for viewers, showing the confrontation between nature and civilization and where this struggle might lead us. Small life forms take on a symbolic meaning. They are life’s foundation.
These little invertebrates maintain the earth’s soil structure, consume decaying matter, pollinate crops and plants and disperse seeds, among other vital tasks. Without them, the visible biosphere would not survive, nor would humans. Without humans, the earth would continue to exist in plenty and glory. Humans, the highest on the Eltonian pyramid, give nothing back to the planet; instead they interfere and destroy its resources. The constructed photographs foresee a human extinction and document the survivors and the debris.
The imagery becomes humorous as the invertebrates float around with artifacts left by Western culture. No crayfish needs a hanger, no leech needs a candle, and no worm requires a screwdriver. Useful objects become useless to the smallest on the pyramid of macroscopic life. Due to the distorted scale relationship, the oppressed becomes the oppressor. The larger-than-life creatures take on a new significance addressing our perception of nature.
